After years of scheming, Tristan a-Lyoni, a man of boundless ambition, deeply evil intent and burgeoning supranatural powers, achieves the position of Lord Protector, in Qa’il, the capital of Ur Dalen. He now plans to exercise complete control of the state. His ruthless quest for power threatens the well-being of the land in many ways.

The only effective opposition to Tristan comes from Elsa, a woman with some supranormal powers who had, fifteen years before, been Tristan’s lover. Tristan had banished her to the Forest when she had glimpsed the evil in his heart and, horrified, rejected him. Although he did not know it at the time, she was carrying his child when he banished her.

To fight Tristan, Elsa seeks the help of beautiful, blond-haired Forester woman Sylvig. Sylvig had been banished from her tribe the a-Tanqua when she refused to let the tribe kill her daughter, Alysa, to whom she had just given birth.

This conflict, which involves many characters including a giant of a man and a dwarf, and a complex plot, explores the corruption of power, how the masses can be manipulated, the dangers of any addiction, the reality of evil and the power of love.
